Lorain County Urban League Receives $657k to Fight Violence
ELYRIA (April 17, 2023) – The Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) just received a giant boost to help combat violence in their community.
The Urban League received $657,312 from the state to provide support and resources for at-risk individuals.
This is all a part of a program that was announced in October of 2022 to address gun violence in the Lorain County area. This came after the death of a young man in the Elyria area.
The program seeks to develop mentors to work with teens and other young adults to be more engaged within their communities, while teaching them ways to resolve issues without resorting to violence.
Governor Mike DeWine said, “This program is the latest step in our holistic approach toward enhanced public safety in Ohio. From giving our law enforcement officers new tools to fight crime to strengthening community-based initiatives that prevent future violence, we’re striving to ensure that our communities have the resources they need to protect and support the public.”
“I think with the Urban League’s help, we’re going to be able to do some real good for our youth that are getting themselves in situations that, I think, with some mentoring, we can prevent,” said Elyria Mayor Frank Whitfield.
