Knoxville Urban League CEO Receives Honors

KNOXVILLE (Oct. 31, 2022) – The Knoxville community is not done honoring Phyllis Nichols.
On Thursday, Oct. 27th, at the Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Awards Gala, the Urban League announced that it was setting up a scholarship in her name.
The Knoxville Urban League (Knoxville, TN) CEO, Phyllis Nichols, announced her retirement back in June.
The scholarship, named the Phyllis Young Nichols Scholarship, will help area students who need financial help receiving a college education. The Urban League said that Nichols will help determine eligibility. The Urban League hopes to assist one student on a yearly basis and will include more students as they get more funding.
In announcing the scholarship, Urban League board member Rev. Harold Middlebrook said, “Phyllis’ ardent advocacy for excellence and equity in public education and her efforts to improve public policy impacting students of color is an inspiration to so many. The endowment will encourage a new generation of students to pursue their dreams regardless of finances or background.”
The scholarship wasn’t the only honor that Nichols received at the gala – she also was the recipient of the Whitney M. Young Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award.
National Urban League CEO Marc Morial said, “Phyllis is more than deserving of the Urban League’s most prestigious award for her servant leadership that has not only progressed the organization’s initiatives, but also improved the lives of residents in the region. The award is a testament to her lasting legacy at the nonprofit and through the people she has positively impacted.”
