KNOXVILLE (Nov. 14, 2022) – The Knoxville Area Urban League partnered with the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a community health fair held on Thursday, Nov. 10th.

One of the purposes of the event was to screen people for health concerns and help give them resources to resolve them, especially those in the Black community. Some of the screenings specifically target health issues that are more prominent within the Black community, such as high blood pressure and carotid ultrasound screenings.

This event is the most helpful to community, as the carotid screenings aren’t usually done at health fairs, even though they are incredibly important.

Dr. Emmanuel Isang, who is with the UT Medical Center, said of the carotid screenings, “I think one of the reasons that it may not be offered as often is because, if you look at the population, that who have it the most are African Americans. But what’s interesting about it is that, unfortunately, African Americans have worst effects from it.”

Felix Harris, with the Urban League, said, “When we’re talking about those who are underserved those who might not have insurance, then this is an opportunity for people to come out and feel comfortable, don’t have to worry about payment.”

The event also offered mammograms and COVID-19 vaccines.
