Jersey City Honors Urban League of Hudson County
JERSEY CITY – In a resolution, the Jersey City Municipal Council honored the Urban League of Hudson County (Jersey City, NJ) for their dedication to the community.
In their resolution, the Council called the Urban League a mainstay in Jersey City for fifty years, a place where low-income people can go for help.
Paying tribute to former Urban League President and CEO Elnora Watson, the resolution said that she was a force behind the Urban League’s move from Bergen Avenue to MLK Drive. She had hoped the Urban League would revitalize that area of the city.
“We hope to be enablers for the indigent, and we know that it will take significant effort,” Watson was quoted as saying at the time. “The idea was to play a part in reclaiming the old neighborhood, getting in early in order to help supply the services that a new budding community will need to succeed.”
Watson passed away several years ago.
The Urban League was responsible for opening Hudson County’s first charter school in 1997. Many of the Urban League’s programs were specifically designed to help the citizens of Hudson County.
