Call it politically correct. Or very on-trend. Either way, the Houston Area Urban League's (Houston, TX) 51st annual "Equal Opportunity Day Gala" answered a rather important question.

Who run the world (er, Houston)?

Women.

Saturday night's black-tie soiree at Hilton Americas-Houston proved a study in girl power at the highest level.

Consider the event's top brass, gala chairs Dr. Judith Craven, former University of Texas System board regent, and Pamela McKay, vice president and general manager of Radio One Houston. The dynamic duo tapped another impressive twosome to serve as honorary chairs: Winell Herron, H-E-B vice president of public, diversity and environmental affairs and June Deadrick, director of state and federal relations for CenterPoint Energy.

The program, presided over by NBC News Chief Education Correspondent and world-class mistress of ceremonies Rehema Ellis, first honored three legacy trailblazers.

In total, more than 800 attendees raised $700,000 toward helping diverse communities secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights.
