SACRAMENTO (Nov. 20, 2023) - The Greater Sacramento Urban League (Sacramento, CA) is partnering with local barbershops in a program called Cut to the Chase, offering mental health support to Black men.

This initiative hosts group therapy sessions with licensed therapists at barbershops, aiming to create a comfortable space where attendees can discuss mental health openly. By combining mental health resources with familiar community spaces, the program tackles barriers to seeking professional help and challenges societal stereotypes surrounding mental health among Black men.

Through facilitated discussions and a welcoming environment, this initiative aims to normalize therapy, reduce stigma, and provide temporary access to mental health services. The Urban League plans to expand the program to include support for women in local salons, building on the success and insights gained from the Cut to the Chase initiative. The sessions foster an atmosphere where individuals can freely express their thoughts and emotions, promoting mental well-being within the Black community.

Recognizing the historical role of barbershops as safe spaces for Black men, the Urban League hopes to leverage them to address mental health disparities within the community. The program seeks to create an open dialogue, diminish the stigma associated with mental health conditions, and provide a therapeutic environment for all participants.
