Greater Sacramento Urban League Introduces Entrepreneurship to Area Youth
SACRAMENTO (April 10, 2023) - Last week, the Greater Sacramento Urban League (Sacramento, CA) hosted a five- day program aimed at introducing entrepreneurship to area youth, from the ages of 14-24.
The program, called “Money Motivated Spring Break,” hopes to get area youth excited about entrepreneurship.
Laura Murrell of the Urban League, said, “We’re here to help young people get their feet wet in entrepreneurship. We’re focused on educating, empowering, and employing people throughout the Greater Sacramento region. This program is important because one of the pillars of the Greater Sacramento Urban League is economic empowerment. That means focusing on wealth building and financial freedom.”
My1of1, a partner of the Urban League in the program, helped students learn how to use screen printing and press machines, creating customized t-shirts.
Michael Wilson, co-founder of My1of1, said, “This program is really important because we do a lot of work with underserved youth. The students are able to design their own brand and turn it into a collection. That collection is made into an online store, where people can support their brands by shopping and buying their stuff. The students receive a portion of the profits, too.”
The program started on Friday, April 7th.
For participants such as Ramello Williams, an 18-year-old homeless young man, who created a brand called “Mister Wellness,” sees hope in what he is learning in the program.
“For me, every day just consists of trying to take out the negatives in my life and turn it into positives.”
