Greater Milwaukee Urban League Pilots Driving Lessons

MILWAUKEE (July 17, 2023) – The Greater Milwaukee Urban League (Milwaukee, WI) has just started a program for young drivers.
The Urban League will now teach students under 18 how to drive at almost no cost to the students.
The Urban League began this program last week.
While the Urban League has been teaching Milwaukee residents how to drive for over ten years, this is the first time that it is providing these lessons for high school students.
The cost for these classes is based on the student’s family income.
Aniya Stroyer, a 16-year-old student, is excited to be taking the classes.
“I feel kind of honored. I’m really happy about this. We would have to wait a very long time for me to get my permit.”
The state of Wisconsin stopped funding driver’s education in school several years ago, and this, said President and CEO of the Urban League Eve Hall, has left students with little options.
“In the state,” she said, “according to the research, there is enough money to support 15,000 students getting free driver’s education – but you have 200,000 high schoolers out there. So, we are speaking about what funding is out there to support students in public education for driver’s ed, it is a small percentage.”
With private driving lessons costing up to $500, Hall says, it is an expense that many families cannot afford, which is why the Urban League is stepping in.
Hall says, “This is really a pilot. We already see the excitement. We already have individuals that are interested in joining us. We know that being able to drive and learning the right way is critical, especially in today’s environment with so much reckless driving.”
