In Fundraising Luncheon, Indianapolis Urban League Reflects on Pandemic

INDIANAPOLIS – In their fundraising luncheon, the Indianapolis Urban League (Indianapolis, IN) reflected on how the pandemic has seen them accelerate the way they’ve helped the community.

The luncheon, held on Wednesday, June 8th, not only serves as  fundraiser for the organization, it also serves as an award ceremony that recognizes people who have given back to the community.

The pandemic has seen the Urban League assist over 50,000 Indiana residents with programs that assist families as they still feel the effects of COVID-19. President of the Urban League, Tony Mason, commented on how the pandemic was a crash course on adapting.

But the Urban League was able to step up and continue to help the community.

Dorresa Holland, who works in workforce development, said, “It’s the pandemic. It definitely has grown more. And during the pandemic, they also offer online courses and virtual. So, you were able to still do the New Beginnings Program,” which is an Urban League program that assists under and unemployed adults earn a livable wage.

Mason said, “We were part of the discussions that led to the IndyRent program, and so we along with twelve or thirteen other neighborhood community centers worked with city of Indianapolis, and we’ve administered over $100 million worth of emergency rent assistance to the community.”

He also said, “We want the community to know that the important part of our work and thanks for the support and generosity of not only our corporate sponsors and local foundations, but by individuals from the community we’re able to help thousands of people.”
