FORT WAYNE (Feb. 26, 2024) - The Fort Wayne Urban League (Fort Wayne, IN) recently formed a partnership with "The Race Card Project.”

The initiative, created by journalist Michele Norris in 2010, allows people to share their stories about race in six words.

Aisha Arrington, President & CEO of the Urban League, highlighted the participation of over 100 community members who shared their six-word race or identity stories.

In a release, she said, “This project provides an opportunity for us all to be a little vulnerable during Black History Month, dig a little deeper, and learn from each other. Everyone has a race story and everyone’s story matters. I believe this quote from Nelson Mandela says it perfectly: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

The Urban League showcased a selection of six-word race stories it received, reflecting a diverse range of personal experiences and societal reflections. From boundary-setting about personal space to reflections on familial history and societal issues like racial injustice, these stories provide insights into the multifaceted nature of race and identity. Each narrative carries its own weight, contributing to a broader dialogue on race and fostering empathy and understanding within the community.

Encouraging further engagement, the Urban League invited all community members to take part in the project by sending their own six-word race stories. By extending this invitation, the organization aims to amplify diverse voices and experiences, fostering inclusivity and dialogue around race and identity.

The deadline for submissions is set for February 29th.
