DreamFi: A New Financial Platform Built to Close the Wealth Gap
For renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the fight for justice has always extended beyond the courtroom. Known as "Black America's Attorney General" for his representation of families in landmark cases involving George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tyre Nichols, and Ahmaud Arbery, Crump has now turned his attention to one of the most persistent inequities facing Black and brown communities: the racial wealth gap.
The numbers are stark. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, households with a white householder had ten times more wealth than those with a Black householder in 2021, with white households holding 80% of all wealth while Black households held just 4.7% (U.S. Census Bureau).
And the retirement gap is just as alarming: in 2022, only 34.8% of Black families had a retirement account such as a 401(k) or IRA, compared with 61.8% of white families, and the median retirement balance for Black families stood at $39,000 — compared to $100,000 for white families (Miami Times Online). It was this reality that drove Crump to co-found DreamFi.
DreamFi is a financial technology company dedicated to transforming financial access and providing resources that empower individuals and families to build financial stability and, ultimately, generational wealth. The urgency behind the platform is backed by data: a national survey commissioned by DreamFi found that more than one in four respondents used check-cashing services in the past year, and only 41% of Black respondents said they could cover a $1,000 emergency, compared with 56% of white respondents.
The initial product offerings include a checking account with no minimum balance, access to over 55,000 surcharge-free ATMs, and built-in protections such as life insurance, up to $1,000 in cell phone protection, telehealth with no copay, and roadside assistance. The platform is designed to help people begin to get ahead — providing not just accounts, but the tools and education needed to build lasting financial health.
