Columbus Urban League Helping AEP Customers with Needed Funds

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Urban League (Columbus, OH) is stepping up for the powerless.
Thousands in the Central Ohio area went without power last week, and the Urban League is working with American Electric Power (AEP) in getting reimbursements for its customers.
Applicants can receive up to $500 in lost goods or any costs related to the power outage. Customers can apply online via the Urban League’s website.
For Toni Fisher, the funds couldn’t come at a better time.
Due to the power outage, she was forced to miss work to take care of her children.
“Some of our food spoiled, a lot of things unthawed, the kids were irritable, we tried to check into hotels, all the hotels were sold out,” she said.
She is happy to hear about the reimbursements.
She said, “To hear about a $500 stipend or check, that would be amazing.”
According to Stephanie Hightower, president and CEO of the Urban League, the need for the funds is very real.
“Yesterday, we have over 300 calls,” she said.
AEP is giving the Urban League with $300,000 in grants to help suffering customers. Hightower has promised to ask for more funding if the need continues.
“This is what the Columbus Urban League was built for, when there are crises, when there are situations, where we need to quickly adapt to the situation.”
