BUFFALO (Feb. 26, 2024) - The Buffalo Urban League (Buffalo, NY) is sowing seeds of hope and resilience in a community plagued by trauma and neglect, following a racist shooting incident two years ago.

After setting up the Buffalo Resiliency Center less than a quarter mile away from the scene of the shooting, the Urban League further aims to provide for the community.

Thomas Beauford Jr., the President and CEO of the Urban League, emphasizes their mission to empower African Americans and underserved communities, striving for social parity, economic self-reliance, and civil rights.

“People can drop in to get individual assistance,” he said. “They can drop in there to find out about all the different programming that we’re having to just rebuild the community, their sense of safety, and promise of what can happen in the future.”

Recognizing the limitations of their current facilities on Genesee St., the Urban League is embarking on a transformative project to construct a new $25 million headquarters at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Dodge Street. This ultramodern facility will combine their services, providing event and retail space, along with housing options. Funding for the project comes from various sources, including contributions from the Erie County Legislature and the NYS Assembly Majority Leader, Crystal Peoples-Stokes.

The new headquarters signifies more than just a physical space; it symbolizes a commitment to revitalizing the East Side community and fostering hope and restoration.

The Urban League plans to complete the project by their centennial in 2027.

“We want to be a part of this energy that brings a lot of hope and starts to repair and restore this community,” Beauford said.
