Birmingham (Oct. 17, 2022) – On Wednesday, Oct. 12th, the Birmingham Urban League (Birmingham, AL) kicked off the 100 Days of Non-Violence campaign at a local high school.

The initiative is meant to address violence among teens and young adults. This year, organizers have introduced gang violence into the conversation. Many of the instances of violence in schools are because of gangs, teens say.

According to police, murder rates have increased by 36% compared to this time last year.

William Barnes, President of the Urban League, said, We’ve had a rash of our school age children that have been killed. When you go back as far as last year and we’ve had record highs of murders in the city of Birmingham and a lot of them are babies, a lot of them are school-aged children. So, we believe it’s extremely important to sit down and talk with them.”

While the kickoff event started in Carver High School, the Urban League will visit seven schools throughout the Birmingham area.
