NASHVILLE (July 24, 2023) – If NASCAR plans to move to Nashville, the Urban League of Middle Tennessee (Nashville, TN) is making sure that it benefits the community.

For NASCAR to come to Nashville, the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway would have to be completely renovated, which would cost millions.

While there is still some opposition, the Urban League has signed a community benefits agreement with Bristol Motor Speedway in advance of such a project.

For President of the Urban League, Clifton Harris, signing the agreement was a no brainer.

“It was about doing the right thing for the community when it comes to economic development and workforce development.”

According to Harris, Bristol is serious about helping the community.

“This was not just a check the box moment,” said Harris. “So, they took our advice right off the bat and increased their wages up to $18.50 an hour.”

Along with raising wages, according to the agreement, Bristol has also agreed to hire locally, with a preference for qualified county minority and diverse businesses. The goal of the project would be to have 30% of the entire project go to minority businesses.

Harris hopes this project moves forward.

“It’s about workforce development and giving people of color an opportunity to access the industry of motor speedway.”
