OKLAHOMA CITY – It is a problem that worries every parent during the summer months – the worry that their children will go hungry.

This is a worry that the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City (Oklahoma City, OK) hopes to alleviate.

Partnering with Regional Food Bank, the Urban League’s Summer Program provides children with a full day program that includes both breakfast, lunch, and a snack.

Sabrina Sykes, a parent with a child in the program, said that the program provided her with, “Security. Not having to worry about him being out on the street.”

With the Urban League’s Summer Program, her son Jeremiah has found a safe space.  Dee Liggens, school-age coordinator at the Urban League, is unsurprised that children feel safe there.

“I believe it’s because we listen. A lot of time with children that feel they don’t have a voice, we make a point.”

Not only does the program feed the children involved with the program, but it also feeds walk-ins.

“This summer alone, we’ve had about 20 people that just walked in and said I’m hungry,” Liggens said.
