Tri-County Urban League Empowers Women in Six-Week Program

PEORIA, IL – The Tri-County Urban League (Peoria, IL) has been working to empower women entrepreneurs for Women’s History Month.

The six-week “Women’s Empowerment Program,” focuses on workforce readiness, teaching women the tools for success. With this program, women will learn tools such as budgeting and writing a successful resume. Tools that are necessary for the women in the area.

“When we look at the poverty numbers in Peoria, African American women are amongst the poorest people in the entire city,” said President and CEO of the Urban League, Dawn Harris Jeffries.

Area artist Ashley Bailey has already used the lessons she learned in the program to get further in her career.

“I’ve gotten a lot of really good help with my resume,” she said. “Also personally with my art.”

Of the program, “It’s designed to be a workforce readiness program that does inside and outside work,” says Harris Jeffries. “We talk about work habits, we talk about styling for interviews, we talk about what it’s like being a woman at work.”
