Tallahassee Urban League Registers Voters

TALLAHASSEE (Oct. 23, 2023) - The Tallahassee Urban League (Tallahassee, FL) recently organized an event aimed at increasing voter registration.

The event was held in response to low voter turnout in black precincts.

The Urban League recognizes the challenge of low voter turnout and aims to address it. The event, known as the "Tallahassee Urban League Crocs and Socks," featured over 30 vendors and organizations. Notably, it resulted in more than 38 people registering to vote on the spot.

In the 2022 elections, only 33% of eligible African American voters in the 32301 and 32304 zip codes turned out for the primary, indicating the need for increased voter engagement. The event also highlighted the importance of voting in gaining access to numerous opportunities. Community partners, such as Capital Health Plan, engaged in the effort to bridge disparities in Black voter turnout. Education and community engagement are seen as essential factors in encouraging more people to vote.

“I think it has to do with education,” said the Urban League’s Delaitre Hollinger. “We have to do a better job of educating our citizens on why it’s important for them to come out and vote. It’s going to be about community education.”

President and CEO of the Tallahassee Urban League, Curtis Taylor, stressed the critical importance of voter registration and community education in addressing these challenges. The event serves as part of a broader effort to encourage voter participation within the community.
