WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 1, 2023) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial honors the legacy of former United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor:

“As the first woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, former Justice O’Connor shattered glass ceilings and opened doors for countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on the judiciary and the nation. Throughout her tenure, she was often known as the court’s swing vote and exhibited a commitment to principles of fairness and pragmatism. She showed support for the nation’s most consequential issues including her pivotal decision to uphold Grutter v. Bollinger which remains significant in shaping affirmative action policies in higher education today.

“After she retired, former Justice O’Connor championed civic education through her initiative, iCivics, where she sought to educate and inspire the next generation about the importance of civic engagement and the functioning of the democratic system.

“Her life and work will transcend her time on the bench and continue to inspire generations to come. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.”
