NEW YORK (January 26, 2020) -- The National Urban League joins the nation in mourning the tragic death of international sports legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, President and CEO Marc H. Morial said today.

“Kobe was a transformational figure who electrified his sport,” Morial said. “As a philanthropist, he was dedicated to eliminating the opportunity gap for low-income children through after school programs, and to helping veterans transition to civilian life.

“As a father of four daughters, he was committed to empowering women, in sports and in life. It is doubly heartbreaking that he died alongside the beloved daughter whom he credited with broadening his view of basketball and women’s sports.

“The loss to the nation is incalculable,” Morial said. “Our hearts go out to the Bryant family and those who knew him best.”
