National Urban League Applauds J. Michelle Childs’ Senate Confirmation to U.S. Court of Appeals

WASHINGTON, DC (July 21, 2022) – Today, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League made a statement regarding J. Michelle Childs’ Senate confirmation to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit:

“Judge Childs has the exemplary educational background, professional experience, and a unique, diverse perspective that the judiciary should possess. We thank President Biden for his continued leadership to ensure our courts reflect the rich diversity of our nation’s people, and the United States Senate for their confirmation.

After law school, Childs worked in private practice, becoming the first Black woman partner at a major South Carolina law firm. After, she worked in South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, Workers' Compensation Commission and served as a state judge in South Carolina for three years. Later, Childs was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, where she served more than a decadeand presided over 5,000 cases; having less than one percent of the decisions reversed or vacated on appeal.

Earlier this week, the National Urban League wrote a letter to the Senate supporting confirmation of Judge Childs. The National Urban League and its 92 affiliates congratulate Judge Childs and wish her the best of luck as she takes on this new role.”
