PRESIDENT & CEO NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE MORIAL: LEGAL DEFENSE FUND’S IFILL HAS BEEN “A FIERCE ADVOCATE;” HER VOICE WILL BE MISSED

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 17, 2021) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to Sherrilyn Ifill’s, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, retirement announcement:

“For nearly 10 years, Sherrilyn Ifill has been a fierce advocate in the continued fight for racial and social justice. Under her leadership, the Legal Defense Fund has grown significantly and has remained a force in the civil rights community.

“Over the years, the National Urban League has worked with the Legal Defense Fund on the restoration voting rights, denouncing anti-civil rights nominees brought forth by the Trump administration, calls for economic justice, police accountability and, most recently, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework.  She was instrumental in the National Urban League lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s Executive Order banning diversity, equity, and inclusion training in the workplace.

Sherrilyn has always been the advocate that our community needed, making sure that the most pressing issues in our democracy are always top of mind.

“It has been an honor to work alongside her and we at the National Urban League wish Sherrilyn success in her next endeavors. I look forward to working with Janai Nelson as she steps into her new role as President of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.”
