Knoxville Area Urban League Holds “Shoes for School” Event

KNOXVILLE – This past Saturday, August 6th, the Knoxville Area Urban League (Knoxville, TN) held their annual “Shoes for School” event.

The event, celebrating its 20th anniversary, had an estimated 6,000 attendees, with over 1,700 pairs of shoes given out to students, along with around 3,000 who picked up school supplies for the upcoming school year.

President and CEO of the Urban League, Phyllis Young Nichols, said, “A new pair of shoes and school supplies excite children and inspire them to be more confident and successful in the classroom. The Knoxville Area Urban League is proud to put smiles on the faces of deserving students for 20 years and counting.”

The event itself is quite popular within the community – this year, families in need were able to pre-register for the event. Those that attended received much needed school supplies.

Along with giving Knoxville children the shoes and school supplies needed to succeed in the upcoming school year, nurses with New Directions Health Care Solutions were also in attendance to give out free COVID-19 vaccinations. Educational information on COVID-19 was also handed out at the event. The Knox Health Department was also in attendance to verify the vaccinations that children needed to attend classes.

Partnering with the Knoxville Area Urban League to organize this event were sponsors Covenant Health, Pilot Company, and the TVA. Both the East Tennessee Children’s House and Boston Government Services were also there to support, with booth sponsors Second Harvard Food Bank of East Tennessee distributed food and fresh produce.
