BIRMINGHAM (Nov. 28, 2022) – As the weather gets colder and the costs of living get higher, many struggle to keep their lights on and their rent paid.

William Barnes, President and CEO of the Birmingham Urban League (Birmingham, AL) assures that there are resources that can help those in need.

These resources include the emergency rental assistance program, which is a program that was born during the pandemic. The program can help those in need with essentials like rent and their utility bills.

According to Barnes, the Urban League approves about 80 families a week for this assistance. With winter fast approaching, he doesn’t believe that number to decrease.

“Many people have been impacted and are meeting the requirements because they either had a reduction in their hours or had a change int their job so they may not be making as much as they once were. So there are many reasons that we believe that folks have been able to qualify for the program,” he said.

Depending on the program, those that qualify can receive up to eighteen months of assistance towards their rent and utility bills.
