Austin Area Urban League Takes Over Shelter Operations in Fight Against Homelessness

AUSTIN – In a new interview, Austin Area Urban League (Austin, TX) President and CEO Quincy Dunlap details how the Urban League is fighting homelessness in Austin.

The Urban League will now be taking over the operations of Austin’s Southbridge shelter, and the interview details how the Urban League will operate the shelter.

Dunlap details how the Urban League is seeking to provide Austin’s homeless with “safe, energy-efficient housing,” while also providing “supportive services to help change the trajectory and improve quality of life for those brothers and sisters through the continuum of care.”

He also detailed how the Urban League will be acquiring some new staff to work at the shelter, while trying to give the homeless the best opportunity to thrive.

When asked about the challenges that lie ahead, Dunlap was eager to point out that the challenge lay in the different ways to handle the homelessness issue. He said, “A shelter is but one point of entry for a brother or sister that lives in unhoused, or homeless status.” He went on to detail the various ways to solve such a complex issue, from workforce and career development to basic skills attainment.

He stresses that they have to do an assessment to fully be able to serve the homeless of Austin in the best possible matter. He is quoted as saying, “There is a process that we’ll go through to transition in and make sure we reduce harm, right, and that we also serve at a high level given the variables that we as entity bring to the table and that our brothers and sisters have with them, given their current status of homelessness or being unhoused.”
