WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 9, 2023) – Recently, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, issued the following statement after Congress passed the Omnibus Spending package for fiscal year 2023:
“The Omnibus Spending package provides critical funding for federal government operations and community projects, including many of the National Urban League’s top priorities. We are grateful to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Charles Schumer, the Congressional Black Caucus, and our other allies in Congress for their advocacy and support of the Urban League movement and the programs we bring to communities across the country."
KNOXVILLE (Jan. 9, 2023) – In their mission to continue to reach out the marginalized communities, the Knoxville Area Urban League (Knoxville, TN) has partnered with the Cherokee Health Systems, along with the Fish Pantry to provide citizens within the Knoxville area with free health care, along with food and vaccines.
On Thursday, Dec. 29th, the Urban League joined Cherokee with its medical van and a small team to give out flu and COVID-19 vaccines outside of the Fish Pantry in the freezing temperatures. Over a hundred people showed up to receive boosters, vaccines, and health services.
Along with medical care, people also received boxes of food from the Fish Pantry.
ELYRIA (Jan. 9, 2023) – Last Wednesday, Jan. 3rd, the Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) kicked off it’s second cohort of its Read and Rise program,
The program is meant to give families strategies that will assist in building literacy at home. It drives home the idea that parents are their children’s first and favorite teachers, while also providing them with books to take home and other resources to help parents.
Urban League President and CEO Parris Smith said, “We’re here to provide those resources and solutions, and help them to realize they’re capable of fostering the love of learning and reading. It’s great to see the excitement and joy of the families to have safe place to learn and be transparent about their experiences with schooling and any concerns they may have.”
