Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis Partners with Walmart for Black Women Entrepreneurs

ST. LOUIS (May 1, 2023) – The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) just made a huge step in helping Black women with businesses.

The Urban League just announced a partnership with Walmart for three years, with a goal of getting Black women-businesses into stores.

Already, inaugural classes have begun, part of a year long program that will also have a graduation ceremony at its conclusion. The program is open to entrepreneurs that have been in business for two years.

Other cities that are participating in the partnership with Walmart are Atlanta, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.

Urban League of Rochester Hosts RASE Report Update

ROCHESTER (April 24, 2023) – One year ago, a historical Commission on Racial and Structural Equity (RASE) released a report to provide recommendations on how to increase equity across the Rochester area.

In recognition of this milestone report, the Urban League of Rochester (Rochester, NY) has partnered with the City of Rochester along with the Rochester School District for an update on the goals set out in the report.

The webinar will include presentations from all over the spectrum – from the City, the County, and community members from the Urban League’s Community Advancing Recommendations Teams (CARTS). This will be facilitated by the Urban League.

The event will take place on Monday, April 24th from 6 – 8:30 PM.

Urban League of Hampton Roads Gets $75k

NORFOLK (April 24, 2023) – The Virginia Natural Gas Foundation has committed $75k to help the Urban League of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, VA).

Specifically, the money will be going towards the Urban League’s programs to help underserved communities achieve financial stability and empowerment. These programs include financial coaching and workshops regarding financial fitness.

Robert DuVall, president of the Virginia Natural Gas Foundation, said, “The Virginia Natural Gas Foundation continues to take steps to help our community members build a path toward financial independence and lifelong success. We are proud to support the Urban League of Hampton Roads and its programs that help provide critical financial education and stability to our underserved communities.”

Tallahassee Urban League Hosts Service Fair

TALLAHASSEE (April 24, 2023) – This past weekend, the Tallahassee Urban League (Tallahassee, FL) hosted a service fair with other community partners.

The service fair was held in the city’s south side this past Saturday, April 22nd.

The event featured neighborhood safety resources, school supplies, and health screenings.

Curtis Taylor, president of the Urban League, said, “We’re putting on this community health fair for free health screenings. Also crime prevention. We have law enforcement out here talking about ways to make your home and community safer. And then, more importantly, we’re giving back to our young people (with) our school giveaway.”

National Urban League Unveils “State of Black America”

ATLANTA (April 24, 2023) – Last Tuesday, April 18th, the National Urban League released the annual “State of Black America.”

The report warned that the country was facing a crisis of hate and extremism within its own borders.

In summary, the report said, “the alarm around the explosive growth of far-right and domestic extremism and the threat it poses to our communities, our families, and our nation.”

Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, said, “There’s a fire blazing in the United States of America. That fire is burning through democracy.”

The event releasing the report was held at Morehouse College, in Atlanta.
