NEW YORK  (March 27, 2024) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to Henry Whitehorn’s election as Sheriff of Caddo Parish:

“Henry Whitehorn’s election represents a triumph not only over the historic racial violence that earned this region the nickname “Bloody Caddo,” but also over the deplorable voter suppression tactics of the present. For months, Mr. Whitehorn’s opponent and his supporters refused to accept the will of the voters and contaminated the democratic process with disinformation.

“Mr. Whitehorn’s election is a triumph for democracy and a testament to his integrity. The people of Caddo Parish have spoken, and we have every confidence they will be well-served by their choice.”

Hundreds of members of the Urban League community have embarked on new careers in technology and thousands more are on the path, three years into a major partnership with Google and the Tides Foundation that launched or expanded the Urban Tech Jobs Program in 11 local affiliates. Urban Tech Jobs Program features a multi-layered approach that includes technology awareness, basic skill building, digital literacy, technology job training and upskilling for workers currently in the technology field.  The Google/Tides partnership, layered over existing workforce, integrated case management, and wrap around services, allowed the National Urban League to launch Digital Training Academies or Tech Academies, depending upon each community’s needs.

So far this year, at least five state legislatures have passed bills seeking to curtail diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. This year’s batch may seep more into the classroom.

Despite vocal opposition from faculty members and racial justice groups, Indiana’s Republican governor signed legislation Wednesday diminishing diversity, equity and inclusion programs and tenure protections in public colleges and universities while simultaneously promoting, as the new law puts it, “intellectual diversity.”
