The Knoxville Area Urban League (Knoxville, TN) honored “The Clinton 12” with its lifetime achievement award at the Equal Opportunity Awards Gala and recognized the volunteer, minority business and corporate leadership award winners.

Jazz and gospel performer Chanté Moore provided the entertainment at the Oct. 24 event held at the Knoxville Convention Center. The annual gala is the Knoxville Area Urban League’s most significant fundraising event of the year and a night of celebration.

“The Equal Opportunity Awards has recognized and saluted the power of individuals to impact their communities for more than 50 years,” said Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League. “It is always incredible to see the people come together to enjoy music and camaraderie and celebrate our community leaders who make a difference in civil rights, education, home ownership, job creation and entrepreneurship in our city.”

The Urban League of Rochester (Rochester, NY) hosted its annual College Readiness Program for local parents and their students.

The program offered free workshops at Monroe Community College (MCC)'s Brighton campus.

Families learned about many things including SAT scores needed to get into college and even tips on how to apply for federal financial aid.

Technology has simplified our lives but did you know it could also disrupt millions of jobs for African Americans? We explain.

The Milwaukee Urban League (Milwaukee, WI) hosted a job recruitment event Friday, Oct. 25, allowing people to talk to several different employers at one location.

The nine employers who took part included Frito Lay, Walmart, Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, and Hyatt Regency Milwaukee.

Jobs ranged from manufacturing, sales associates, hospitality and customer service. 

"Every employer that's here today is an employer we have a direct relationship with, so even if people missed this event, we encourage them to come on down, because we still have those contacts with those employers to refer people, and I'm sure they're not going to fill all their openings today," said Milwaukee Urban League's workforce coach, Elamin Abdullah.

The Urban League of Greater Columbus (Columbus, GA) hosted its annual Equal Opportunity Dinner at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.

The dinner serves as a cornerstone fundraiser and donation campaign which helps the Urban League reach their goals of providing things like social empowerment, economic development, summer jobs, and resources for the disadvantaged in the community.

“It’s very important that the community came out to support this effort I love to see when we are together on one accord especially now when we have all these murders going on in our city it just speaks volumes that everybody came out tonight to be supportive of what Urban League is doing in the community,” said Pastor Vincent Bell, Columbus Urban League Board Chair.

National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the passing of longtime Congressman John Conyers of Michigan:

“As a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, John Conyers was instrumental in demanding a platform for African American voices at the highest level of government. He pushed to have Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, birthday designated a national holiday immediately following King’s assassination. 

“He was far ahead of the curve on progressive issues such as reparations and  single-payer health care, introducing the Commission to Study Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act every session of his tenure since 1989 and the United States National Health Care Act  each session since 2015.

“He was a great champion of the National Urban League’s issues, from economic justice to voting rights. We mourn his loss and honor his profound legacy.”

A new report about the future of work in the United States casts a somber outlook about the effects of artificial intelligence on African-American employment – particularly for African-American men.

According to a recent headline: Artificial intelligence is slated to disrupt 4.5 million jobs for African Americans, who have a 10% greater likelihood of automation-based job loss than other workers.
