Urban League of Louisiana (New Orleans, LA) has teamed up with Verizon for the Verizon Technology Loaner Program, a new initiative to support Urban League program participants in the Greater New Orleans Area impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. 

The program will provide technology support to residents who are home-schooling children and those who are unemployed due to the pandemic in support of their job search efforts.

“We are proud to support our community by providing devices, connectivity and resources,” said Verizon’s Louisiana Government Affairs Director Tandra LeMay. “Communication is imperative now more than ever. Verizon is committed to keeping communities connected during this time of crisis.”

While businesses are starting to open back up, there is still a need for food for many families in the Tallahassee community.

The Tallahassee Urban League (Tallahassee, FL), along with Second Harvest of the Big Bend, is helping hundreds of families in Frenchtown with a much needed food distribution.

The Second Harvest-Urban League distribution wasn't just a drive-thru but was also available for those walking up.

The Urban League says they know the need for food is of the utmost importance, especially right now.

"We have a connection with our citizens here," said Curtis Taylor, the president & CEO of Tallahassee Urban League. "They will come to us when they might not go to other places."

Friday’s jobless numbers indicated near-record unemployment in the United States. Many more families are struggling to put food on the table.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis) has sponsored food giveaways where they’ve given away boxes of food to 10,000 families. 

Urban League President and CEO Michael McMillan said they’ve spent about $500,000 so far but the effort could be as much as $2 million before it’s all over. McMillan hopes to keep having the giveaways through August when kids go back to school.

Job Loss in April Was Historic; Historic Racial Disparity Only Worsened Under COVID-19

The April Jobs Report was expected to be momentous, but the numbers still have the power to shock. The 14.7 percent unemployment rate reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is the highest since the peak of the Great Depression. At least 20.5 million people lost their jobs in April, bringing the 7-week total to about 33 million.

NEW YORK (May 7, 2020) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today commended Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer for taking up the League’s proposal to use coronavirus aid returned by large public companies for legitimate, Main Street and rural small businesses and the lending institutions that serve them. 

NAACP, National Urban League, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, and the National Action Network (NAN) today released the following joint statement in response to the recent killing of Ahmaud Arbery:

The video we have all seen does not show a citizen’s arrest. It shows an execution.

It is clear that law enforcement authorities must immediately arrest the McMichaels for this crime. The failure to hold these two individuals accountable for the killing of Mr. Arbery would mean that white citizens may hunt down an unarmed, non-violent Black man in broad daylight and kill him with impunity. Nothing in Georgia law licenses this conduct. The McMichaels must stand trial for this killing.
