SPRINGFIELD (Oct. 31, 2022) – Camp Atwater has reason to celebrate this Halloween.

On Thursday, Oct. 27th, it was announced that the camp will receive $450,000 to rejuvenate its facilities.

The camp, which was a home away from home for many black children within the Springfield area, is run by the Urban League of Springfield (Springfield, MA). The camp is in North Brookfield, with 40 buildings, a three-acre island, and offers children various activities such as horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and other physical activities. It also provides children with performing arts and educational classes.

Alumni of the camp include former U.S. attorney of Massachusetts Wayne Budd, and Oscar award winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

KNOXVILLE (Oct. 31, 2022) – The Knoxville community is not done honoring Phyllis Nichols.

On Thursday, Oct. 27th, at the Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Awards Gala, the Urban League announced that it was setting up a scholarship in her name.

The Knoxville Urban League (Knoxville, TN) CEO, Phyllis Nichols, announced her retirement back in June.

The scholarship, named the Phyllis Young Nichols Scholarship, will help area students who need financial help receiving a college education. The Urban League said that Nichols will help determine eligibility. The Urban League hopes to assist one student on a yearly basis and will include more students as they get more funding.

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 31, 2022) – The Los Angeles Urban League (Los Angeles, CA) held a graduation ceremony for the UCLA Medical Assistant Program recently.

In a 400% increase over last year, there were eight students graduating. The Urban League, via its supportive platform, enabled the students to enter the program to earn a livable wage. All graduates have been offered employment throughout the UCLA health portfolio.

The program teaches its students the importance of listening and advocating for their patients, which is a vital aspect of the program. Diversity and advocacy are main tenets of the program and are a part of the students’ training.
