With 428,000 jobs added in April, the unemployment rate – 3.6% – and the number of unemployed individuals – 5.9 million – continue to inch closer to their February 2020 pre-pandemic levels of 3.5% unemployment 5.7 million unemployed individuals.

Justice Dept. Inquiry Finds ‘Systemic Failures’ at Mississippi Prison

WASHINGTON — Officials at Mississippi’s largest prison routinely violated the rights of prisoners by failing to provide mental health treatment, suicide counseling and protection from violence, among its “systemic failures” that led to widespread death and despair, the Justice Department said on Wednesday.

National Urban League Names UNC Professor Iheoma Iruka New Census Advisor

“Since Three-fifths Compromise of 1787, which counted enslaved Americans as three-fifths of a person, the Census has been used as a tool to marginalize and oppress communities of color,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial. “With her extensive experience and expertise in research and advocacy, Dr. Iruka will help the National Urban League build on our decades of defending the rights of Black and Brown Americans to be fully represented in public life and have their voices heard.”

Urban League of Metro St. Louis Still Fighting Against COVID-19

ST. LOUIS – While some may believe the pandemic is over, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) are not part of that group.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, in partnership with the Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers will still offer free COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

From Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM through 5 PM, services will be held by appointment at two of the Betty Jean Kerr centers.

For James Clark, Vice President of the Urban League’s Division of Public Safety and Community Response, this was a no-brainer.

Urban League of Northwest Indiana Receives $60k for Program

GARY – For a fourth consecutive year, NIPSCO has awarded The Urban League of Northwest Indiana (Gary, IN) $60k in their college and career readiness program partnership.

The funding was given to the Urban League in support of the Urban League’s hostingof the 2022 NIPSCO Energy Ambassador (NEA) Program. The program consists of virtual workshops and activities that will encourage high school juniors and seniors to pursue STEM careers. Students will learn from NIPSCO leaders that will teach students about gas and electricity as well as NIPSCO programs.

According to Alexius Barber, NIPSCO Public Affairs Manager, NIPSCO is very happy to continue this partnership with the Urban League.
