Single Mother Achieves Homeownership with $75,000 in Down Payment Assistance
Minneapolis, MN
Thanks to the Urban league's pre-purchase program Mercedes E. was able to receive down payment assistance and purchase a home.
Mercedes, a 32-years-old, black single mother of two has worked as a waitress for over 12 years. Despite her dedication and consistent effort to pay her bills on time, she was unable to save enough for the down payment needed to purchase a home.
Mercedes first learned about the Urban League Twin Cities (ULTC) through her father, who had been a client in 2016. After participating in ULTC’s programs, he successfully purchased a home in 2019. Inspired by his journey and encouraged by his experience, Mercedes decided to reach out to the Urban League for support in achieving her own dream of homeownership.
Once connected with the Urban League, Mercedes began working with Lynne K., a HUD-certified Housing Counselor and Manager. Lynne carefully reviewed Mercedes’ credit and budget, both of which reflected her financial responsibility and commitment. Recognizing her potential and determination, Lynne guided her through the process of applying for down payment assistance.
With Lynne’s support, Mercedes qualified for $75,000 in Down Payment Assistance (DPA), a life-changing opportunity that made homeownership possible. This assistance, combined with her strong financial habits, allowed her to purchase a home in North Minneapolis, close to her children’s school and the community she knows and loves.
Today, Mercedes E. is a proud homeowner, building stability and a brighter future for her family. Her children can remain in their school and community, surrounded by familiar faces and opportunities. More than just a house, this milestone represents a foundation for generational wealth and long-term security. Mercedes’ story is a powerful example of what’s possible when determination meets the right support—and how the Urban League continues to empower families to achieve their dreams.
