Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr.

President, National Medical Association

Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. is the 126th President of the National Medical Association and a board-certified forensic pathologist with 20 years of experience. He recently served as President of Howard University Hospital where he led sweeping transformation of one of the nation’s most historic academic safety-net hospitals. Prior to that, Dr. Mitchell served as Chief Medical Officer and Tenured Professor of Pathology at Howard University Faculty Practice Plan. As Washington, DC's Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Mitchell managed thousands of autopsies and later became Interim Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, working on violence prevention policy for the city. Dr. Mitchell co-authored Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do About It, co-hosted the NAACP Image Awardsnominated podcast Official Ignorance, and appeared on numerous television programs like Dateline with Lester Holt, PBS Frontline, Meet the Press, and Roland Martin. Dr. Mitchell studied at Howard University, Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School, George Washington University Hospital, and completed his fellowship at New York City's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
