Taurean Uthman
Division Director of Youth Education at the Rochester affiliate of Urban League
Taurean Uthman is the Division Director of Youth Education at the Rochester affiliate of Urban League. He has spent the last five years working for the ULR in programs such as workforce development (face forward three, Steps to success) and the Education department (Gear Up, Volunteering for Project Ready Mentor).
His fondness for youth has stemmed from coaching basketball for students in high school for the last 20 years. He finds fulfillment in persisting in advocating for youths' voices and creating programs or events that would promote youth enrichment.
He is newer to his role as Division Director of Youth Education; however, he is no stranger to working with scholars in his community and positive mentoring to encourage them to change. He continues to develop unique partnerships in his community to advocate youth voice and ongoing development of youth in Rochester. In just nine months, he has grown his department from 50 – 100 students to now serving roughly 500 students. The Rochester City School District has asked the Urban League to be the leading agency for aid as they redevelop their middle school support systems in the upcoming year. His team has also grown, and their support has been the prime reason for his success.
