Chicago Urban League Rental Assistance Helps Avoid Eviction Due to COVID

When a 55-year-old African American woman lost her job because of COVID-19 in April 2020, the Chicago Urban League stepped in to stop her eviction process. After her request for unemployment was denied she started the appeal process. But the loss of income led to her falling behind on rent and other household expenses.

She was referred to the Chicago Urban League for rental assistance by County Care, the client’s healthcare provider. The rental housing counselor met with the client to discuss their current situation and to provide resources and guidance.

She was also informed of other Urban League services and provided external referrals to assist with paying other household expenses.

The client received $2000 and was able to bring her rent current. “I was able to tap into the Pride of the Urban League which bought me great relief. The Pride of helping people for more than 100 years. I tell others about the League and how I was able to get some much needed assistance, especially in these trying times,”
