The Urban League of the Upstate Fights Maternal Mortality

GREENVILLE (Nov. 6, 2023) – Sound the alarm. The maternal mortality rates in Greenville County – and across the nation - are rising.
The Urban League of the Upstate (Greenville, SC) is working hard to address the health disparities that can improve maternal health outcomes. The Urban League recently acquired the historic McClaren Medical Shelter and plans to transform it into the McClaren Institute for Health and Quality of Life, aiming to address healthcare and wellness disparities in the Black community in the surrounding area.
The contributing factors to maternal mortality are complex, including racial disparities, age, and access to healthcare resources. With the Institute, the Urban League hopes to mitigate those factors.
The Urban League understands that there needs to be a collective effort to address maternal mortality rates and reach women where they are to raise awareness about pregnancy-related risks.
