GARY (March 13, 2023) – The Urban League of Northwest Indiana (Gary, IN) is seeking ways to encourage diversity in its community.

In its effort to do so, the Urban League is hosting a diversity symposium this upcoming May at Valparaiso University. The event will be held on May 17th at 8:30 AM.

In 2022, the Urban League invited students from all over the area to discuss the issue of diversity and inclusion. They have continued that practice this year.

Vanessa Allen-McCloud, President of the Urban League, said, “The inclusion of students in the 2022 DEI Symposium was enthusiastically received. They added great value to the dialogue along with creative solutions for moving towards equality. It is our goal to engage even more young people as the symposium continues to grow.”

This year, the symposium will include discussions on inequity, poverty, hate crimes, and critical race theory.

Jose D. Padilla, president of Valparaiso University, is happy to welcome back the Urban League for this event.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the Urban League DEI symposium on Valparaiso University’s campus for the second straight year. It is such an incredible opportunity to celebrate diversity and work towards positive change. I hope you will join us so, as a community, we can strengthen and deepen our efforts to grow and enrich those around us.”
