PEORIA – Peoria firefighters have saved the day.

On Wednesday, July 6th, the Peoria Fire Department donated $500 to the Tri-County Urban League (Peoria, IL) for their school supply drive.

“Fill the Fire Truck,” is a school supply drive for Peoria public school students. The drive was an idea had by Scott Howard, who is a firefighter of the Peoria fire department. He was the one who reached out the Urban League to make it happen.

Howard is himself a graduate of the Peoria public school system, so he understands the needs of the students. The drive was an opportunity to give back to those that have helped him along the way.

“These people had such a huge effect in my life and to be able to help the students who are about to be there with them give them one leg in the door or a step on the day school starts is just awesome,” Howard gushed. “We just want to step forward and step up, as public servants, and be able to give back to the community that made all of us who we are today.”

The Urban League is hopeful that they will be able to fill up 6,000 backpacks with school supplies for students. They’re having a “Back to School Bash” on July 30th for the backpacks to be presented to students.

According to Howard, they have raised $1,500 for students, and are hopeful for more donations.
