Tacoma Urban League Helps to Reimburse Families for Thanksgiving

TACOMA (Nov. 27, 2023) - Rising grocery prices have intensified the financial strain on families, particularly during Thanksgiving.
However, a heartening initiative led by the Tacoma Urban League (Tacoma, WA), with other downtown businesses, offered a reprieve to fortunate shoppers at the WinCo on 72nd Street. These businesses collectively raised $12,000 to reimburse families for their Thanksgiving dinner expenses, recognizing the challenges many face during the holidays.
Rather than requiring families to visit a specific location for assistance, the organizers opted for a more convenient approach – they met them where they spent the money, providing instant reimbursement. This strategy aimed to alleviate the added pressure of making extra stops during the already busy holiday season, ensuring families received direct support where it was most needed.
A notable aspect of this initiative was its commitment to honoring individual preferences, with an emphasis on the importance of allowing families to purchase the specific foods they preferred for their Thanksgiving meals instead of providing a standard set of items. This personalized approach aimed to respect diverse traditions and ensure that families could enjoy a meal that resonated with their unique tastes and traditions.
Given that families typically spend an average of $150 on their Thanksgiving meals, this initiative, spearheaded by the Urban League and collaborating businesses, served as a meaningful gesture to alleviate financial strain during a tough financial time for many.
