WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 2, 2023) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial commended President Biden for his efforts to create opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals who often face barriers when returning home to their communities:

“President Biden’s new plan provides necessary and overdue improvements for the reentry process. America is supposed to be a nation of second chances, and yet, far too often, people returning home to their communities face obstacles that stand in the way of obtaining the resources needed to get back on their feet including housing, employment, healthcare, and education. This hits communities of color, who are disproportionately represented in the prison system, particularly hard. This plan is an important step forward in acknowledging the discrepancies in our nation’s justice system and algins with the recommendations we’ve outlined to the administration.

“For more than 50 years, the National Urban League has provided rehabilitation and reentry support to communities across the country. Currently, we have 45 affiliates across the nation that provide reentry services that serve justice-involved youth and adults looking for a fresh start. The services we provide range from educational, employment, housing, and industry recognized credentials. "The testimonies we receive from participants have given us a glimpse of the positive impact our programming has had on helping them break through and overcome barriers that, without assistance, may have prevented them from starting over or resulted in re-incarceration.

“We commend President Biden for his efforts to support successful re-entry, rehabilitation, and public safety efforts. We look forward to working with his administration to expand on these initiatives.”
