Lorain Urban League Gets Huge Book Donation

ELYRIA (March 6, 2023) – The Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) just received a huge donation for its literacy program.
This past Friday, March 3rd, the Urban League received over 600 children’s books donated by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems for its Read and Rise Family Literacy Program.
Education and Youth Development Coordinator for the Urban League Achilles Morales is thrilled with the gift.
“We are incredibly excited to be able to receive this donation,” he said. “We’re so grateful for all of the work we’ve been able to do in partnership with Bendix, and for this donation, because it’s definitely going to help us enhance the lives of families.”
The Read and Rise program gives families hands-on strategies for building literacy at home. It drives home the fact that parents are their children’s first teachers, and it strives to help parents build a healthy reading environment at home.
“Our goal is to serve as many families as we can and for families to see improvement in their child’s reading ability and skills,” Morales said. “We’d love to be able to affect graduation rates in the county, eventually, but we know that it starts with our kids in the program now becoming better readers and caretakers at home feeling more confident in their ability to help.”
