Lorain County Urban League Kicks Off Reading Cohort

ELYRIA (Jan. 9, 2023) – Last Wednesday, Jan. 3rd, the Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) kicked off it’s second cohort of its Read and Rise program,
The program is meant to give families strategies that will assist in building literacy at home. It drives home the idea that parents are their children’s first and favorite teachers, while also providing them with books to take home and other resources to help parents.
Urban League President and CEO Parris Smith said, “We’re here to provide those resources and solutions, and help them to realize they’re capable of fostering the love of learning and reading. It’s great to see the excitement and joy of the families to have safe place to learn and be transparent about their experiences with schooling and any concerns they may have.”
The workshops will take place at the Urban League offices until Feb. 8th. The Urban League also provides free dinner and childcare for children over the age of two.
The program is in partnership with Scholastic and the Houston Area Urban League (Houston, TX), which was able to improve local graduation rates through a similar program.
“Through implementing this programming, Houston was able to track those students to turn failing school districts into passing districts and increase graduation rates. Obviously, we have time before we’re able to get to that bug picture, but we have tot start somewhere.”
