Lorain County Urban League Hosts Teen Open Mic

ELYRIA (July 10, 2023) – The Lorain County Urban League (Elyria, OH) is hosting an open mic for its Project Ready students.
The event, taking place on Tuesday, July 18th at the Urban League, from 7:30 PM – 10 PM.
Project Ready is an Urban League program that empowers high school students by providing them exposure to college, life, and career.
Achilles Morales, Director of Education and Youth Development at the Urban League, said, “We are thrilled to host the Open Mic Night as part of our Project Ready Summer Program. This event is an opportunity for youth to showcase their unique talents and passions.”
The event has a diverse lineup that includes singing, poetry readings, and comedy acts that focus on mental health.
Project Ready student Dekarion Wimberly was inspired by the Urban League’s college road tour and is the organizer of this event.
“I’m very into poetry and I watch a lot of poetry slams, and I thought it would be cool to bring the open mic concept to Elyria. I wanted to give other kids my age the opportunity to perform and speak their truth.”
Parris M. Smith, President and CEO of the Urban League, said, “We are excited to witness the incredible talents of our students at the Open Mic Night. Through this event, we aim to nurture their artistic abilities, boost their confidence and create a sense of unity within the Lorain County Urban League community.”
