Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Welcome to the Nation Urban League’s (NUL) space for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) which contains the latest information and resources on NUL’s DEI capabilities. Since 1910, the mission of NUL has been to uplift and empower African Americans and historically marginalized communities. As a result, NUL has been actively engaged in diversifying America’s workforce for over 100 years prior to the coinage of DEI as the shared expression for this work. With the recent emergence and fast-paced, widespread adoption of DEI, many public and private organizations are now developing initiatives aimed at achieving a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workspace. This benefits corporations both internally and externally and leads to higher profitability. As such, NUL’s role and competence in this space is skillful, but also necessary and essential to the development of critical and successful DEI strategies and implementation. With decades of deep subject matter expertise, let NUL use its experience and resources to make your organization a more equitable workplace.

The League promotes economic empowerment through education and job training, housing and community development, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health, and quality of life.

The National Urban League and its team of experts will provide DEI organizational assessments to help you where to start on your DEI journey. The process of assessing, recognizing and disrupting is about “calling employers in, not calling employers out.” It provides clarity and support that
enables any committed employer, regardless of where they are on the journey toward equity, to have confidence they can make meaningful progress. Once we’ve determined where you are, we can then work with you to develop a roadmap that will help guide your implementation strategy.
3. Attracting, Hiring, and Recruiting
First and foremost, we continue to harness the power of our network and programs such our Career Fair, Networking Events, and Job Network to support organizations in their efforts towards attracting, hiring and recruiting diverse talent. This is achieved through our hosted online job boards, career fairs, and sponsored workforce development programs that connect corporate partners to diverse talent. These programs also provide tools and resources for diverse professionals no matter where they are in their career.
4. DEI Strategy
We help you create the case for change, the value proposition for DEI, align your leadership team and identify the key areas to focus on. Our extensive global expertise and experience can help you create a high-performing culture that is truly representative. An initial diagnostic will reveal your strengths and assets, as well as your gaps and challenges. From there we work closely with you to develop a roadmap for reaching your near- and medium-term priorities, while keeping your long-term definition of success firmly in view.
5. DEI Talent and Culture
Embrace an end-to-end approach to making DEI a core component of your organization. We work with you at every step, from developing a repeatable model for successful recruitment to the role-modeling and behavior change so critical to achieving your desired culture. We'll help you develop a repeatable playbook for converting target talent pools into successful hires, and create a culture cascade program to evolve the broader culture and provide the necessary reinforcing support.
6. Memoranda of Understanding
Most recently, the National Urban League has pioneered the adoption of written memorandums of understanding with several communication companies, setting forth comprehensive strategic plans with goals, timetables, and metrics to measure progress toward DEI. Areas addressed include: Governance, includes the company’s board; Personnel, includes the company’s C-suite; Procurement, includes the company’s spending on goods and services, and in Philanthropy, includes community investment.
7. Leadership and Talent Development
In conjunction with Inclusion Alchemy, each leader completes the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI) assessment and receives an individual feedback session. IDI is the premier cross-cultural assessment of intercultural competence that is used by thousands of individuals and organizations globally to build the intercultural competence needed to achieve international and domestic diversity and inclusion goals and outcomes.
8. Supplier Diversity
Unfortunately, a more efficient supply base and a commitment to supplier diversity are often competing objectives, and in a bottom-line economy, the more apparent financial benefit of efficiency wins out. Companies are still more likely to prefer larger, more established suppliers, which generally feel safer and more cost-effective. Finding the balance between straight-forward profits, diversity, and emphasizing best practices to ensure maximum cost-effectiveness, are essential to providing opportunities and still realizing a nice ROI.
