The Urban League of Philadelphia’s Out4Good Program Turned A Young Man’s Life Around
When 14-year-old Kevin S. walked into a neighborhood convenience store and committed a robbery. It was a life-altering decision but rather than being sentenced to probation, a common consequence for children, Kevin was sent to adult prison.
Four years later, Kevin, now 18, was released. Instead of harboring anger and resentment, he returned to his community with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, change and contribute.
Staff at the Urban League of Philadelphia recruited him for the Out4Good program. Ready for a fresh start, he was eager to participate.
Kevin is a “punctual self-starter and team player,” reported his supervisor. He recently began preparing Kevin for a more challenging role in the company.
ResultKevin made significant progress in the program and benefited from peer support and mentorship. He participated in a Cognitive Behavior Training course where he worked on accepting himself and to reflect on his past actions. He also gained practical skills like how to write a resume and honed his interviewing techniques. Kevin was even thrilled to open his first bank account.
When the time came to apply for his first job, Kevin was prepared. “I’ve been listening and learning,” he said. “I know I can do it.”
Kevin aced the interview and was hired by a local company that shared positive reviews about his performance.
