Single Mother Creates Business to Employ Her Family
Migrating to Jacksonville, Florida from El Salvador, single mother Maria is developing her small business, Amaya Cleaning Services, Inc. to help sustain her family and create employment opportunities for her three young children.
Being successful on her own in securing contracts with local real estate developers and the government, Maria needed help in obtaining the required insurance. Additionally, not being confident in speaking English, Ms. Melendez found it challenging to communicate with non-Spanish speakers. Fortunately, Ms. Melendez was referred to Thomas B. Waters, Director of the Jacksonville Urban League Entrepreneurship Center (JULEC), who can communicate in Spanish.
As a client of the JULEC, Maria will be re-incorporated as an LLC. and will be referred to the Clara White Mission Janitorial Certification Program and Wells Fargo Bank for payroll services and Workman’s Compensation Insurance. Additionally, she will continue to receive mentorship and training from Thomas as she scales her business.
