Three Generations Achieve Homeownership Through Financial Counseling and Determination
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Thanks to Urban League of Broward County’s Pre-Purchase Counseling, Adelaide was able to buy her first home, a multi-generational home for her mother, her grandmother and herself.
Adelaide and her mother attended the First-Time Homebuyer Workshop hosted by the Urban League of Broward County on December 1, 2023. After participating in the class, they scheduled a one-on-one housing counseling session, which took place on March 21, 2024.
Adelaide’s household consists of three generations, with her and her mother acting as caregivers for her grandmother. The family met with a HUD Certified Housing Counselor who helped assess their income, assets, and monthly expenses to determine housing affordability and to create a realistic plan. At the time of the session, Adelaide had a credit score of 586, and her mother’s score was 623. The Housing Counselor identified the need to reduce debt and improve their credit profiles. Through commitment to the action plan, Adelaide took major steps to improve their financial position. She successfully reduced their monthly debt payments from $1,115 to $333 and took on a second job to increase savings. Adelaide was able to save $18,000 toward the down payment. On May 21, 2025, Adelaide and her mother closed on a brand-new 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in the Collier City area for $386,000.
