WASHINGTON, DC (August 5, 2022) – Today, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, made the following statement congratulating Lieutenant General Michael Langley on his Senate confirmation as the first Black four-star General in the Marine Corp's history:

“In a ceremony to take place this weekend, Lieutenant General Langley will be officially promoted to four-star general in the Marine Corp, making him the first Black man to receive this distinction in the military branch’s 246-year history. In his new role, Lt. Gen. Langley will command all U.S. military forces in Africa where he will oversee 6,000 troops.

“Lt. Gen. Langley’s promotion highlights the importance of addressing the well documented equity gaps in our armed forces, which reflect the gaps in civilian life. The core of America’s strength lies in the diversity of our people and every branch of government should be reflective of that. Moreover, we must ensure not only diversity but also equity for all, especially those who have served our country in the armed forces.

“We send Lt. Gen. Langley – a native of my home state of Louisiana – best wishes as he takes on this new role and look forward to working with him and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to meet the needs of servicemen and women of color. We thank each of them for their service. They make us proud."
