National Urban League President & CEO to Buffalo: “We Will Not Forget”

BUFFALO – National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial had a message for the residents of Buffalo this past weekend.
“We will not forget Buffalo.”
Standing in front of the Jefferson Avenue Tops Market where the tragedy occurred, Morial stood with Buffalo’s Black leaders, and other political leaders, as he spoke about the shooting and the need for action.
In his speech, Morial spoke about not only the need for tougher gun laws, but also a call for action to end systemic racism.
“It’s a call to action on gun laws. It’s a call to action on hate crimes. It’s a call to action on economic inclusion,” Morial said.
He told those in the crowd that the National Urban League has asked the President Biden administration for a White House summit on hate, domestic terrorism, and white supremacy. He also said the organization is leaning on Congress to pass stricter gun control measures.
U.S. Representative Brian Higgins, who was also at the event, promised to vote “yes” on the gun control measures that Congress votes on next week – an assault weapons ban and a measure for comprehensive background checks.
“How does a nation like ours allow a depraved mind and a depraved heart to purchase, legally, a weapon of mass destruction?” Higgins wondered.
Mayor Byron Brown, also in attendance, said that he had asked the President for assistance, saying, “I asked the President for more resources to help this community heal, the family heal, the businesses heal.”
Higgins reiterated Morial’s statement that we cannot forget what happened in Buffalo, and we can’t have it happen again.
“Six minutes, one shooter, ten people dead, thirteen shot,” he said. “Thoughts and prayers are appreciated, but action is essential.”
